Less than six months have passed since reaching the 900 million mark and today Microsoft is celebrating another numerical milestone linked to the spread of Windows 10: the operating system is now present on over a billion devices active on a monthly basis. The announcement comes directly from the pages of the official blog with a post signed by Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of the Modern Life and Search & Devices divisions.
Today we are happy to announce that over a billion people have chosen Windows 10 in 200 countries, contributing to the activation of over a billion devices based on the platform. We couldn't be more grateful to our customers, partners and employees for helping us get this far.
Windows 10: a billion devices
The count includes desktop and laptop computers, Xbox line consoles and devices such as HoloLens that leverage the different editions of the operating system. On this occasion, the Redmond group also sheds light on another statistic, that relating to the community of Insider which lends itself to provide feedback on the preview versions of the software: currently it is composed of approximately 17.8 million members.
Microsoft it can therefore celebrate the target established at the debut of Windows 10, even if with a couple of years of delay: the intention declared in the first part of 2015 was to reach a billion devices within three years, while almost five were needed . A delay caused primarily by the failure of projects related to the mobile universe where the Windows Phone platform has not proved capable of competing on equal terms with Android and iOS, soon throwing in the towel.
In the post, the software house stresses that W10 is currently "the only operating system behind over 80,000 different models and configurations for laptops and 2-in-1s from more than 1,000 different manufacturers". The end of the life cycle for one of its most illustrious and widespread predecessors has also contributed to accelerating its adoption in recent months, Windows 7, which ended in January.
Then there is the arrival of Windows 10X, embodiment with interface optimized for dual screen devices or with foldable display. It will be present among others on board that Surface Neo produced and marketed directly by the company by the end of the year. All this hoping that the team working on the platform will pay more attention to stability and reliability, considering the many problems that have emerged with the latest updates.
