What's this Column? Or rather, what will it be? It will be a social networks, but unlike Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or TikTok we probably won't be part of it. Or we won't even feel the need. Already baptized not without reason "the social platform for the rich" will ask for a payment from $ 100,000 for registration. Halved figure for Nobel Prizes and decimated for personalities considered an institution in a particular area such as medicine or scientific research.
Column: $ 100.00 for registration
The idea is proposed by a team composed of Aron Ping D’Souza as CEO (the man behind the closure of the Gawker blog), by the consultant Jake Lodwick (co-founder of Vimeo) and the creative director Sarah Cone (founder of Social Impact Capital). Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and one of the first to invest in Facebook, was also among the possible financiers, together with Rob Hayes, Uber supporter since the beginning of his adventure. Rumors also about the involvement of Marc Benioff (CEO of Salesforce) and Stephen Wolfram (mathematician founder of Wolfram Research).
The document which presents the initiative, shared in recent weeks with MIT Technology Review and now made public, lists a large number of celebrity belonging to the world of entertainment, politics and not only who would have already expressed an interest in taking part in it: there are Leonardo DiCaprio, Mike Ovitz, Kanye West, Mike Bloomberg, James Murdoch, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Aaron Sorkin, Steve Woznick, Condoleezza Rice and Jeremy Clarkson just to give some examples.
How will Column work? The idea is to allow each of the members the opportunity to create their own community. A columnin fact. Anyone can take part, but not joining for free (unless explicitly permitted by the person managing it) as happens on more traditional social networks. The stated goal is to create a network capable of bringing online and bringing out only high quality content. There will be no Like button, but something that is described as the Truth button (Trust) to evaluate the authoritativeness and value of shared posts.
At the moment there is no information on the technology that will form the basis of the platform nor certainties as to what will make its business model sustainable. The shared document mentions the possibility of generating profits, as well as from the registrations, also from theadvertising. However, it is not easy to imagine how advertisements can be implemented on a network made up of a limited number of subscribers, all paying. No launch date set. The success of the project is to be verified.
